Resonant X-ray Diffraction: basic theoretical principles

چکیده
We present the main steps governing the theory of resonant x-ray diffraction (RXD). We focus on the derivation of the anomalous scattering amplitude from perturbation theory and starting from the low-energy expansion of the Dirac Hamiltonian. We give the main ingredients of the multipolar expansion in term of electric and magnetic transitions. We also show the expansion in terms of scattering tensors of the material. We end by giving the RXD formula necessary to simulate in practice this spectroscopy.

Resonant soft x-ray scattering from stepped surfaces of SrTiO3.
We studied the resonant diffraction signal from stepped surfaces of SrTiO(3) at the Ti 2p → 3d (L(2,3)) resonance in comparison with x-ray absorption (XAS) and specular reflectivity data. The steps on the surface form an artificial superstructure suitable as a model system for resonant soft x-ray diffraction. A small step density on the surface is sufficient to produce a well defined diffractio...
متن کاملSoft X-ray resonant magnetic diffraction.
We have conducted the first soft x-ray diffraction experiments from a bulk single crystal, studying the bilayer manganite La2-2xSr1+2xMn2O7 with x=0.475 in which we were able to access the (002) Bragg reflection using soft x rays. The Bragg reflection displays a strong resonant enhancement at the L(III) and L(II) manganese absorption edges. We demonstrate that the resonant enhancement of the ma...
متن کاملResonant x-ray diffraction studies on the charge ordering in magnetite.
Here we show that the low temperature phase of magnetite is associated with an effective, although fractional, ordering of the charge. Evidence and a quantitative evaluation of the atomic charges are achieved by using resonant x-ray diffraction (RXD) experiments whose results are further analyzed with the help of ab initio calculations of the scattering factors involved. By confirming the resul...
متن کاملPolarization periodicity in the B(1) columnar phase determined by resonant x-ray scattering.
We report structural results that evidence the polarization distribution of the blocks in the columnar phase of an achiral bent-core liquid crystal. The study was performed using resonant x-ray diffraction at the sulfur K edge on oriented samples aligned on substrates. The extra periodicity is revealed through the violation of the systematic extinction rule of the structural symmetry group alon...
